In The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Lenina does not rebel but instead remains submissive and conforming. Bernard tries to involve her in anti-social behaviours which frightens her ‘“I don’t understand anything,’ she said with decision, determined to preserve her incomprehension intact” (Huxley 19). Lenina Crowe is perhaps the only female character worth mentioning from the novel. Their ability to give birth is also taken from them as the authoritarian system in place sterilizes two thirds of all women and ovaries are surgically removed when the World States allows for reproduction. In Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, women are prevented from reaching positions of power.
She is sweet, gentle and I was genuinely rooting for her survival. Although overall Weena is portrayed as weak, useless and inferior, I found myself to be quite fond of her. The Time Traveller treats her in a way that someone might treat their pet. Weena is the classic damsel in distress, saved by a strong, superior, masculine figure. The Time Traveller jumps in and saves her. We are first introduced to her when she is drowning in a stream. Wells, Weena is the only female character.
The lack of strong female characters, or in fact the lack of women entirely, fuels the masculine discourse of science fiction. Considering the texts studied throughout this course, it appears that there is a lack of strong female characters in 19 th and early 20 th century science fiction.
